If you have an eye for interior design or a knack for turning trash into treasures, you probably know all about how popular DIY home decor is. What about DIY home decor for teens? If you had it your way, you would have all the time and resources you need to do project after project. Too bad your room is only so big. Or is it?
What if you could create a DIY home decor teen business?? I am here to tell you:
And here is how:
Let me introduce you to Alicia. Alicia is a lot like you. Her cute dog is named Max. She was a student not too long ago. Chocolate is her favorite. And she loves DIY home decor.
Alicia decided to start an online business a few years ago sharing her DIY decorating ideas. Her business, Thrifty and Chic, now has more than 34,000 followers on Facebook and was named one of the top 20 DIY-ers online on Feedspot.
Alicia is wildly successful, right along with Mandi from Vintage Revivals, Layla from The Lettered Cottage, Bethany from Bargain Bethany, Storee Kelley from Storee of my Life, and Casey & Bridget from The DIY Playbook. All of these women make great money from doing what they love. But do you know what you have that gives you an opportunity that none of these women have?
A teen audience.
There is no one (and I mean no one!) out there that does DIY decorating for teens. Do you like decorating your room? Do you think there are teenagers out there who would love to know your tricks?
Teens don’t generally have money to spend on decorating their rooms. But they LOVE to personalize their space. What am I trying to say?
You have an opportunity, here. And opportunity that could make you money. Let me show you how.
A quick disclaimer, I am not just talking to girls here. There are a lot of men out there that love home improvement more than women! And they’ve got nobody to follow. Not only do you have the opportunity to provide great DIY home decor teen boys content, but for men too!
I (Steve) recently posted a video on another business site that I have (Journey to Sustainability) that shows how to make bunk beds out of pallets. It has over 6,400 views! Pallet home decor is a great way to go!
Nothing is more manly than taking a pallet and making something amazing out of it! Right now, I am creating a jungle gym/swing set/backyard castle for my kids out of pallets. If you like to work with wood, pallet projects could get you a huge audience!! The opportunity is there! Pallet home decor and yard fixtures can be lots of fun!
Choosing a Platform
The first step is deciding where you want to produce content and build your audience.
This is a method of getting started that has worked for many DIY home decorators. If you like to write and have a camera that you can use to take good pictures of what you are doing, this is a great way to go. How To Make Money As A Kid’s website creation tutorial (free) can help you get started on the right track. It can even help you choose your own domain name (instead of ____.blogspot.com) which makes you look really professional. And, discounts on hosting are included. This is a great place to start.
If you would rather make videos then write, try Youtube. Many teens are on this platform a lot. It can be a great way to get people on board. Keep in mind though: it is important to drive your followers to a place that is all yours. You don’t want your business to fall apart if one day YouTube decides to block you. SO, even if you choose this platform as your main stream, it is important to have a website too.
Facebook has an amazing ability that you may or may not have heard about: Marketplace. This new extension of Facebook allows you to sell things to your friends and family or even in group merchant groups. This is great because your friends and family are usually happy to buy from you. They know you, and if you are creating really cool things that they would love to have in their homes, you could make quite a profit through this online Facebook store.
Do I even need to tell you? Pinterest is the #1 place that people go for DIY ideas. Whatever you do, don’t neglect this platform. This is a great place to not only introduce people to you and your website, but for DIY home decor to sell.
Making Money from DIY Home Decor for Teens
It has become SO EASY for you to start making money online as a teen. How To Make Money As A Kid has pooled enough resources for you to learn how to make a full adult income within a few years of dedicated work. It’s called the Cash Academy; do yourself a favor and check it out (it’s free!).
You will find that the best (and easiest) online money comes from advertising. Choose your niche and build your audience by producing quality content. Once your fan base starts building, companies will start paying you to advertise on your pages (website, youtube, etc.).
Again, once you have a bigger audience, brands will take interest in you. For a fee, you can tell your audience about their products. You could promote tools, thrift stores, hardware stores, paints, glues, and everything else you can think of.
DIY Home Decor to Sell
Because of the nature of this business, you will have a plethora of product. If you like decorating this much, there is a chance your walls don’t have any more room for another hanging. So sell them!
Pinterest and Facebook have special tools that allow you to sell your product right on those social sites. You can also sell your product on Amazon, Ebay, Etsy, your website, or other online platforms.
Email is a great way to do something called “upselling.” You know how this works—it has happened to you many times, I’ll bet. They sign up for your email list, you tell them every time you have posted a new craft.
Every once a while, you can tell them about a product, training, or something that you are selling, thus “upselling” them to something that directly makes you money. You could even sell whatever you made to the first person who emails you back—that would ensure that they opened every email as soon as they got it.
Additionally, you tantalize them with a preview and you can drive them to your site over and over again, which allows you to make more money on advertising.
Maybe you have heard this pitch from other online money-makers, especially life and business coaches: You pay me $$$ and you get to join the club. If you can think of enough attractive perks that the “in-club” members get, you will have people that want to pay for a membership to all this amazing stuff!
This might involve receiving a package in the mail every week with project materials, a chance to have their home spotlighted on your site, or the privilege of having your cell phone number.
Contribute to Other Sites
Sometimes you can make some money by writing a guest post/video for another popular site. If you have a DIY room decor that you are particularly proud of or that is especially unique, try selling it to some the corporate go-tos, Country Living, Good Housekeeping, DIY Network, DIY Projects for Teens, etc. It doesn’t even have to be a company that does DIY home decor for teens; market your material to any media company that targets teens, men, or whoever your target market is.

One thing you should know before you decide where you want to start: You can make $ much money if you have a presence on a social media platform, like Youtube or Instagram. You can make $$$ money if you have a website to back it up where you can collect emails, market product, leverage ads, create membership portals, and everything else you need to make these options successful. At least that is what millionaire Joe Pulizzi says. (Psst. You should listen to him. He is the #1 expert on how to make money online by producing content.)
