Tip # 1: Get Paid More as a 11 Year Old Babysitting
Take a CPR course or a babysitting class. The Red Cross offers both courses all over the United States. They are affordable and easy to complete in an afternoon.
Give four hours of your time and you will probably get higher pay and more calls. If you don’t have $30 to spend on the course, ask your parents for a loan. You will probably make enough to pay them back after one night of babysitting with your higher rate.

P.S. The Red Cross babysitting course is great because it will teach you how to protect yourself and the children you are tending in all sorts of situations. Our babysitting course has more of a money-making angle. It will show you how to impress parents, market yourself, and land more babysitting jobs. Be careful of signing up for one while thinking you will get the other.
Tip # 2: Thousands of 11 year old Babysitters are Starting with Mother’s Helper Jobs…And it’s Working.
Elizabeth lived in a small town in Arizona. When she turned 11, she wondered, “Can an 11 year old babysit?” She wanted to start, but she was terrified of messing up. She was just starting out and besides that, she didn’t know many families.
Elizabeth called the Poletti’s—one of the few families she did know—and offered to work as a “Mother’s Helper.” This meant that she would essentially babysit without Mrs. Poletti actually leaving. She played with the Poletti boys and helped with chores, all the while, gaining Mrs. Poletti’s trust. She learned this:
As a Mother’s Helper, if you can be responsible and make it fun for the kids, the parents will want to pay you to come back.

After a session or two of Mother’s Helper, Elizabeth became the Poletti’s favorite babysitter. Mr. Poletti eventually shared Elizabeth’s name with a wealthy work friend who needed a part-time nanny during the summer. From the results of that first Mother’s Helper job, Elizabeth made over $800.
Tip # 3: How to Answer the Question, “How Much do you Charge?”
You can expect this question from any new client, “How much do you charge?” We’ve got a formula to figure it out for all of your babysitting jobs for 11 year olds.
Consider starting with a base rate ($2-$5 for an 11-year old babysitter) and adding a couple of dollars per hour per kid. For example:
Emily is a 11 year old babysitter who charges $3 per hour for the first child, with an additional $2 per hour for every other child.
|Number of Kids||1||2||3||4|
|What Emily Charges per hour||$3||$5||$7||$9|
When she babysits the Moore baby (only 1 child) she charges $3 per hour. When she babysits the Williamson boys (3 children), she charges $7 per hour (3+2+2).
This is just a basic model to follow. Here are some variations to be aware of:
- Add $1-$5 to your base rate for any certifications you have.
- Increase your base rate if the children you tend have special needs or if the parent has additional expectations outside normal babysitting duties.
- Decrease your base rate and/or charge per additional child when the children are sleeping, at school, or otherwise not requiring your attention.
We talk about all of this in more detail in the “How Much do I Charge” section of our Babysitting Business Academy. It will help you learn how to handle all money conversations so that you are making what you are worth.
Tip # 4: Do this and Children Will be More Excited to See You AND More Obedient
You’ve probably heard of Mary Poppins? She was the ultimate babysitter.
In a popular scene, she meets the kids she will be nannying and shows them her bag. The children are glued in amazement as she pulls out a mirror to hang on the wall, a coat rack, a decorative plant, a pair of shoes, a lamp, and more and more and more! Because of the magic bag alone, the children declare her to be “wonderful!”
You, too, can have a “magic bag.” You will probably fill your bag with crafts and games, but the children will still be amazed by it. Every time you visit, they will be eager to see what you brought. For sheer excitement, they will ask their parents to call you again and again. And that isn’t even the best part:
You can use your bag to motivate the kids to be good. “If you can’t be nice to your brother you won’t get to play the game that is in the fun bag.” or “All the toys have to be put away before we can open the fun bag!”
Be sure to fill your fun bag with age-appropriate activities and see how your babysitting jobs for 11 year olds improve. And enjoy! The options are endless.
