Idea: Fix Computers
Age Requirement: 13+
Start-up Costs: $0
Potential Income: $20 to $30 an hour
Mike is 15. He knows how to program and fix electronics. He has been using these skills to get paid fixing computers. The thing I love about Mike is that he turned his hobby and passion of computers and electronics into a way to make money. If the world took more effort in making money with what they love doing instead of making money to make money- I think we’d see a lot more happy people… like Mike.
Mike, like most kids, made money mowing lawns and working at a summer camp. This last summer he started fixing computers for people. It all started when he was a kid. He would take apart the old family computer and break it. He eventually learned how to put them back together and fix them so he would have his own computer. His dad recommended that he learn how to program since companies are always looking for computer programmers. He started teaching himself how to program by buying a game that would let him program on his Nintendo DS. He now knows 5 programming languages and uses those skills to make his own games and program his own electronics. He is currently building a rocket. The rocket will have a device in the nose that will measure how high up it can go. For Mike, nothing is impossible. If Mike puts his mind to it, he can create anything he wants. For example, take the Sonic Screwdriver that he made that can turn off any TV in the world.
There are many perks to developing skills like the ones Mike has developed. People are constantly giving him their broken electronics. Using those electronics he has built his own laptop, Xbox 360 and many other things. The best perks though, are people will call him to fix their computers and he charges $20 an hour.
How To Fix Computers
Mike installs updates, new parts, virus protection software, and gets rid of viruses. He often finds the broken part in a computer and calls in on the warranty to get a new part and replace it. Mike recovers files from crashed hard drives. He helps people secure their wifi networks so they won’t get hacked. He sets preferences to people’s routers so they can get Internet through the whole house. If you don’t know how to do any of these things, search Google to find out how. If you can do any of these things then you would be good at fixing computers and start making your own money as a kid that way.
How To Get Customers
Mike mainly gets new clients by word of mouth. When he started out his business, he called people in his neighborhood and posted messages on Facebook. We talked about some ways he could get more clients and we concluded that if more people were aware of just how MUCH Mike can fix, then he could get more clients. By doing an excellent job with current clients, he hopes that that will be communicated for future clients.
As you are creating your own advertisements be it Facebook, Twitter or good ol’ fashion fliers- here is an example of something you can say.Are you saying to yourself…
My computer is running so slow.
My computer is frozen.
I cannot get online
My computer turns off by itself
My smart phone won’t synch with my PC.
My printer is not working.
I lost or accidentally deleted some files.
I think my computer has a virus.
My computer won’t start.
My screen went blank.
My computer is acting weird.
My computer won’t boot.
My computer is making strange noises.
My Internet is so slow.
My computer keeps overheating.
My Internet keeps disconnecting.
My wifi is really weak in parts of my house.
I am worried about my wifi security.
If so, call [insert your name] because I can fix it!
You can contact me via phone: [insert phone number] or email: [insert email]
If you are making fliers, make the font big enough for more seasoned future customers to be able to read. Deliver them around your neighborhood.
On Facebook you could ask one or more of these questions to see if there is anyone who needs help. Ask, “Is your computer running slow? I can fix it. Call [insert name] at [insert phone number]. Please share with anyone who has a slow computer. Thanks.” Consistently share one of these questions every couple of days on Facebook. People often don’t realize they need help. They assume that slow Internet, computer, etc is normal. Bring the problem to their attention and get their business.
Put an ad up on craigslist or other local free classifieds. People will look there to find someone to fix their computer problems.
Ask for referrals. After you help each client, ask him or her to refer anyone who needs help fixing his or her computer. As they see your excellent work, your professional work ethic and your dependability (see here for tips on this), they will talk to their friends and the word will spread that you are good at fixing computers. Those people will call you and you will get as much business as you want.
You sure won’t be making $20/hour at McDonalds.
