Places that Hire at 16
Want to work for someone who will give you a set amount of hours and a steady paycheck?
Here are some quick ideas of places you can apply based on your new awesome abilities as a 16-year-old.
You Can Get a Food Handler’s Permit
You can now legally play with other people’s food. This means you can work in restaurants, cafeterias, and food packaging places.
Restaurants include fast food, sit-down places, dessert shops, bakeries, grocery store delis, and more.
*Quick Tip: Before accepting a job at a restaurant (especially fast food), I recommend going there and observing how the workers interact with each other. You could even ask your cashier if they like their job (they will tell you they do because they don’t want to get in trouble, but their level of enthusiasm might give you a hint at how much they really like their job).
Don’t wince at the idea of fast food, if you have good co-workers, every day can feel like you are just hanging out with friends. Bad experiences are usually the result of a bad team.
You may not want to work in your own school cafeteria, but you could serve and prepare food at other institutions like retirement homes, schools, department stores, hospitals, museums, and residence halls. I bet you didn’t think of those. 😉
Food packaging might only be available in you have a large factory in your area that produces food (it is worth looking into). However, if working conditions are “dangerous” it may not be one of the places that hire at 16.
You Can Work Late
If you want to convince your parents to let you stay up later, you can quote your state law:
In most states, employees under 16 have to go home at 7 pm. As a 16-year-old, you have until 10 pm to make money!
This makes restaurants where you could earn some higher tips a great option. You can also now work closing shifts without worrying for places that close at 9 pm. Can you think up a list of places in your city/town that close at 9 that could make good jobs for 16-year-olds?
You Can Work More Hours
Say goodbye to stipulations!
Promotion time? If you are already in a good job for 16-year-olds, your 16th birthday is a great opportunity for you to approach your boss about more responsibility (and a pay raise).
With more responsibility, comes more hours. You can cover longer shifts and start earning some titles and experiences that will look good on your resume.
If you are just starting to apply for 16-year-old jobs, keep your eyes open for those “Now Hiring” signs. Most jobs that advertise openings that way are jobs that hire at 16.
*Quick Tip: If you submitted resumes as a 14 or 15-year-old, call the companies where you applied and let them know that you are now 16 and see if they have any availability. There is a chance they may have thrown your resume out just because of your age. Do it right and they will be impressed by your repeat interest and follow-up phone call. They may not have any openings, but you can still offer to send them an updated resume. If they say that’s okay, send it right away! You may get a note on the top that says, “Followed up on the application, pleasant on phone. Consider 1st when something opens up.” Here are some tips for following up successfully.
You Can Drive
If you are a little more confident then Ron here, you could make some money from driving!
You are not likely to get hired to be a driver: ensuring a 16-year-old is expensive for an employer. But think about how you could use your new driving capabilities:
A paper route just got a lot more do-able. Restaurants and grocery stores that deliver always need willing drivers. You can also start looking for jobs in a wider radius: you don’t have to walk or bike anymore!

Driving also works well in entrepreneurial jobs for 16 year olds :
Entrepreneurial 16-Year-Old Jobs
Want to get paid more as a babysitter? Offer to drive.
One of a parent’s least favorite jobs is driving across town to pick up kid A from piano lessons, dropping kid B off at t-ball practice along the way, and trying not to make kid C late for the reading club meeting. Consider this:
Especially if you have already earned a family’s trust as a babysitter, you could offer to be the chauffeur and raise your rates.
Other ways to use driving to make money: Think of someone you know that has errands they don’t enjoy. You could pick up groceries for a busy mom who orders online or take an elderly acquaintance to a doctor’s appointment. Be creative!
Hobby Jobs for 16 year olds
Is there something that you totally love to do? Something you wish you could get paid for? You may be able to turn it into a money-making endeavor. Check this out:
If you have a talent, try teaching or coaching! You may say, “Oh, I could never do that! I am no expert!”
Well, many parents would love to get their young kids in flute lessons or find a private baseball coach, but they don’t want to (or can’t) pay a professional $20-50 an hour. That is where you come in.
For $8-15 an hour, you could teach the basics: where middle “C” is or how to dribble a basketball glove. You may not be an expert, but you probably have more to teach than you think.
Are you a crafty individual? If you think you could make something worth buying, try it out! You could crochet mini minions and sell them online or deliver fresh bread to your neighbors every week. These kinds of things can be great Saturday jobs for 16 year olds: you can generate some product on the weekend and then sell throughout the week.
